Complaints by Concerned Citizens to the Advertising Standards Bureau
The F-Word
‘The “F” word is used repeatedly but beeped out. Other uncouth language is also used. I find this ad offensive and feel that we should not be reinforcing Oasis’ bad behaviour……This ad is not appropriate for daytime airing…
Chicken Sex
The audio says something like "do you want to know how our chicken is made?" Then they proceed to show a rooster copulating with a hen. I don't know about other people, but I find that offensive in any time slot. The next thing we know will be beef producers/butchers/wool manufacturers all showing how their product was created. I wonder if we showed two naked people having sex to produce a baby, that that would be acceptable. I think not!
Belittling Refugees
"These fowl ads make light of asylum seekers sewing their lips together…to use the horror of the plight of fellow human beings for profit is one of the most disgusting things anyone could do."
"There is sufficient vilification and ignorance in this country about various racial groups post Sept 11, and the recent spate of suicide bombings, and this type of advertising is openly contributing to it."
"The matter of the detainees and their conditions and behaviour is not a suitable subject for
humour."
"…very, very poor, bad taste, and trivializing a very important subject. Whatever the politics are, and whether it is right or wrong that the people should be in detention or not, it is not a subject that should be made light of and put in an advert for chicken!"
"Why is there always someone out there prepared to make money on the back of someone else’s
misery?"
"I found the exploitation of the plight of those currently detained at Woomera to be appalling."
"…I believe the ad is both insensitive to the issue of the people being detained there and belittles
them and their situation."
Selling Women's Bodies
"The play on ‘centrefold’ as a reference to soft porn magazines which objectify women’s bodies as objects of consumption … The reference to ‘natural breasts and firm buns’ which equates the burger with a woman."
Old People Sex
Below is a description of their filth:
DESCRIPTION OF THE ADVERTISEMENT
This radio advertisement consists of a conversation between an elderly couple about Nando’s
Espetada chicken:
Bob: Look at this Bev! Bev: Wow. That’s well hung!
Bob: Look at it dangling there. It’s huge. Bev: It looks nice.
Bob: You want a pice of it? Bev: Ooooh yes….Mmmmm
Bob: Tastes good hey?
A male voiceover announces “Nando’s Espetada. Marinated chicken thigh fillets skewered then flame grilled with Peri-Peri and hung over the side dish of your choice. Nando’s Espetada. It’s well-hung chicken.
Bob: Careful Bev, it’s dribbling down your chin.
A wonderful concerned citizen writes:
This ad is lewd and honestly, makes me feel a bit sick. The mental picture created by the ad is not a pleasant one.
It’s clearly trying to reference sexual connotations...Obviously we are dropping our standards and are happy for young, impressionable teenagers to have a giggle at this style of marketing whilst knowing what they are referencing.
Mocking the Mentally Ill
They suggest a nando-fix patch would be useful for someone "who can’t be trusted with cutlery", and show a mentally unwell woman in a straightjacket with bulbous eyes. As a member of lobby groups for reduction in stigma and wellbeing of those afflicted with mental illnesses, I find this portrayal distressing and in very bad taste.
I'm sure the morally bankrupt staff at Nandos find it amusing to mock the disabled or mentally ill, but society needs to take a stand against this low-life corporation.
If you agree with these people, PLEDGE to never eat there again.
