Please help me get a handle on this ad from Nandos. I admit that I did eat at Nandos once, but I promise you that I never will again.

hey morgan
i have no idea about this ad. I actually saw this ad on tv late one night and thought it was totally wierd. So wierd that i woke up the next day and thought it was a dream (because a)it featured a half naked woman and b) it made no sense at all)

I told my partner about it because she’s eaten at Nandos before and she didn’t get it either.

The following week i walked past a Nandos and they had a poster in the window saying ‘nandos gum..not available here’. Thoughtfully there wasn’t a picture of a stripper on the poster for the dine in families to view.

I still have no idea about it though- I’m guessing that either
a)some crack addict has been given free reign to design the ad or
b) its some wierd pisstake trying to tell us that nandos is so good that if you ever wanted to not eat the stuff you’d have to choose some for of gum to stop the cravings.

Either way, i still don’t understand the role of the stripper and he relation to gum or the proposed target market of nandos which judging by our local shopping strip (is this some wierd link…strip and strippers???) is largely families.

All in all, i have no idea

Hey Morgs. I’ve heard about this ad. All i can think is that it must be a piss take on the usual ‘help mum out - buy fast food’ type of ad. But the link with strippers and gum is all a bit confusing… It must be a piss take.

Morgan
Jun 1st, 2007 at 10:26 am

I am sort of thinking though that if it was a piss take should we not be able to be sure of it? And we are not. From what I can tell so far, the gum is not real and this is a campaign designed to get ones attention, but it seriously turns me off. It is bad taste in my opinion.

You’re right Morgan — this is one of the weirdest (and tasteless) adverts I’ve seen on tv. You have to wonder what was going through their collective minds when they produced and started screening it.

I saw the disgusting Nandos Nicotine Gum ad for the first time on television last night. I couldn't believe it. How on Earth did this get onto TV??

A woman wearing nothing but a tiny G-string sticking her backside into a man's face for money? Then she barely covers her topless breasts and flaunts it all?

Since when did this sort of blatant sexual, degrading for women advertising become permissable?

What sort of message does this send to young girls? Stick your naked ass in a man's face and you'll be paid??

This is dreadful and I'm lodging a complaint.

I've seen other complaints about this advertisement on here - so at least I know I'm not the only one who finds it highly offensive.

By MsEE Submitted at 15-May-2007 at 11:37am

WTF?? I was shocked. This t.v commercial for nandos was aired on channel 7,10,9 and SBS. WHY??
Nandos is a "Family Orientated Restaraunt". Then why have they taken the aproach to use someone from the sex/adult industry, i.e stripper, to promote nandos. To make things more disturbing...After the topless strupper..barely covering her nipples with hands...bends over with her gstring bottom in a mans face..then man puts money in her gstring...THEN the next scene cuts to 2 young kids eating and the women eating a restaurant!!! what? EXTREMELY INAPPROPIATE TO FEATURE KIDS IN ADULT TARGETED COMMERCIAL.

If anyone out there feels sickened at this nandos attempt..please go to - www.advertisingstandardsbureau.com.au
and lodge a complaint online.

By betty Submitted at 09-May-2007 at 10:17am

You should think more before you put certain things on air as the other night I was disgusted when a commercial on channel 10 advertising NANDOS - takeaway food resturant with a mother dancing around a pole. I feel as though this was inappropriate as my children were still awake watching TV as it was still 10.30pm!!!! Having seen that advertisement I will definately not be going to the resturant especially with my family as it is degrading the female body image of a mother.

Shame on you NANDOS and people who thought about that advertisement and put it on air!!!!!!!

It would be nice if someone could address my email and give me an explanation of why such a rediculous advertisement was aired on TV!

Has anyone seen the Nando Patch "Stripper" Commercial?

I was totally outraged that such a Commercial was allowed to be shown!
I switched from watching Ten,Win & Prime because of not only their constant ad bombarding but also the lack of something worth watching, only to find that also on SBS you can be watching something rated G or PG thinking it's safe for all the family, only to be hit with an x rated commercial like that Nando Patch Ad

Does every ad these days have to have naked women, boobs,or sexually explicit everything? I'm sick and tired of seeing this

If I had the power I would sack those so called Classification Officers and the one that is responsible for the so called Code of Conduct!
I mean what kind of people are they? Do they have any sense of morals?I know they are not responsible for the trashy Ads but they are responsible for accepting them as ok to show on Television

Has anyone complained about it to those responsible

My partner and I just watched this ad, and am lucky enough to have a HD Tv so I am able to rewind Live TV. We watched this ad serveral times to try and get the aim of this ad, so then we looked it up on google and this is how we got here.
At first we thought it was an ad for gum.
Was shocked that they showed a ‘career girl’ then the same girl stripping then in the next shot with her family in a family restuarant. I really don’t know who Nando’s think their Target Market is, but I personally have been put of Nando’s from this ad.
I do understand the concept of the ad, but my first impressions of the ad was it was made by some teenagers and put onto the TV as a joke. Hope Nandos didn’t pay big bucks for this ad, as I think they are going to ruin their reputation if they continue to air this ad.
Leigh Says:
May 23rd, 2007 at 12:40 am

I totally agree with Debbie, I just watched this ad to and as a female, I think this is the most stupidest ad I have every laid eyes on. Thought Nandos’ has wasted their money on this campaign and have also lost me as a customer especially after my son whatched this television commerical !!! I think the time slot of a girl stripping during a Cartoon Show Time slot, was absolutely ridicous and I will also be making complaints about the television stations for even airing this at this time.
Olivia Says:
May 23rd, 2007 at 12:49 pm

How degrading to women, and how pathetic of Nandos to even suggest woman would want to prostitue their bodies for there food. You’ve lost me, I’ll NEVER eat at one of your stores and ‘word of mouth’ is VERY powerful and there are a lot of paople complaining about this….You have definately lost more than you have gained from this campaign.

Joe Lopez Says:

I watched this ad several times tonight with my 15 and 17 year old sons and it had us stumped. What the hell was it about? We googled it and it got us here. We dont even know what Nandos is but we have at least worked out the ad now. Very strange ad, im glad we dont know what Nandos is. All the clever ads in the world this has got to be one of the worst we have all seen!

Michael Says:
May 27th, 2007 at 10:38 pm

the mistake in the ad is that they did not show the product. They actually have bottles they sell/sold in supermarkets. They should have shown this prominently on the screen in the family scene. Or at least shown the Nandos sign above the counter behind the family. People may have got it. THis would have stopped most of the confusion and maybe people would have talked about it - rather than feeling silly why they cant understand it. People dont talk about things they feel silly about - thats why the internet is good to learn a little more.

They may have generated awareness but I doubt it will do much else. I have eaten at Nandos and it does not match their in store brand at all. Big mistake, which means it is a big waste of money for them and counter productive.

Watching some strippers bum and thinking about food does not mix for me. Plus as pointed out here it does not match the family target at all. Women are also incredibly influential as to where a family eats and I bet 90% of them are offended and disgusted by it.

“Viral Campaigns” - mmmmmm, a buzz word tossed around and not properly understood.

Ban this ridiculous add..I don’t want my kids watching this smut. It is far too raunchy to advertise a restaurant and I have no idea what they were thinking when they made it. Isn’t it enough my kids can no longer watch music video’s without all the smut that now adverts are just as bad..good god get a grip people!! No wonder our youth it getting out of control.

This ad is so wrong guys . I am a media student and have discussed this ad in class with other people , everyone seems to be confused , except for the guys! Even though I get that its a joke, I dont see anything logical behind it at all, what Nandos is saying is “You can be a mum , a wife and YES you can also be a stripper !” WTH? are they out of their mind? And to top it off they create a “Happy Ending” with an image of her family having fun at the dinner table , gigling. I bet if her husband new where she was earlier that night he would throw that chicken at her and file for a divorce. Anyway it seems to be a Cheap sales trick , “sex sells ” - to guys only.

This ad is wack!!
I totally did not know what was going on until i read these posts. I saw it before watching the latest ‘Pirates of the Carribean’ movie at the cinema. I really don’t think they should have shown it then, I mean there were heaps of kids there and they would have all been thinking ‘whats that lady doing?’ Straight after the ad finished, you could hear everyone talking about it. It was in the wrong movie, everyone knows kids are going to watch pirates, even with an M rating. Nando’s should not have run it for movies like this.
Oh well, their loss..

Mempis Says:

What is most disturbing about this ad is that the women has her arse pointing directly into the guys face when he places money in her g-string. Imagine the view he is getting!

Tania Says:
June 1st, 2007 at 12:06 am

yes is this add ok for kids?
For the modern human race in fact?
I have seen this add several times and had no idea of the product it was trying to sell. I was too busy focusing on the pair of tits and ass and the family dinner?? And I am a woman…hilarious.
Tonight I made a point of listening to it, to find out what it was marketing. I don’t smoke and if I did I would not be using this product to stop that’s for sure. But I’m feeling the urge to pole dance and then go home to my family and have KFC.
Too many men in media, making stupid adds that make men look just …well how can I say it….stupid! Just too funny.

Tania Says:

Jo Says:

This add gets people talking. But is it helping Nando’s with its sales, or is it helping Nando’s to alineate its customers? The ad guys thought they were being smart. The Mac ad is smart. This is just lame & pathetic. I feel sorry for all the Nando’s franchisees.

I was watching SBS late at night and then I saw this ad. To be honest the ad kind of freaked me out. What the hell was going on. Do they really have nando patches ! It must be a joke. Then I did a search on Google and came to the nandos web site. It really is for Nando’s chicken restaurants. I think this ad is a very bad look for Nandos

Ellie Says:

John, I was watching SBS too!

I couldn’t work out if this ad was for real, I googled it and it led me here. First of all, I don’t even know what ‘nandos’ is, by what I’ve read it’s a take away food place? Whatever the aim of the ad was… it doesn’t pay off.

Duncan Says:

victor huerta Says:

I saw this ad only a few days ago, and for a moment thought it may be from Channel 028 as they seem to have a lot of nudity from time to time.

I am offended by this ad with this woman showing her breasts, I mean what is she trying to prove?.

And this final note to “April” who wrote in on the 23rd of May 2007 at 11. 56pm . if there is ‘nothing’ wrong with this ad and you April are happy it is on air, what would you say if “Nando’s” then said ‘OK We will pay a yrs supply of school fees for any girl who is 17yo and over if they agree to do the very same ad” What if April. you had a 17 yo daughter who thought what a great way to pay for my education, would you still cheer it on?

vworld Says:
June 3rd, 2007 at 12:33 pm

To April,
the one who thought that the latest NANDO FIX GUM is fine, Why don’t you just admit that It is not that skilled to remove clothing and to pose in certain positions.

“Lots of people do not have a job” so please do not try to justify this rude behavuour. What would you say if your husband (if you have one) went to one of these “strippers” and then came home for dinner without telling you? I bet you would not like it. What sort of loyalty is that?

Memphis Says:
June 3rd, 2007 at 6:23 pm

Let’s for a moment just imagine this ad typifies the average family.

I now pose you a question:

What kind of self respecting husband would allow his slut of a wife to be a stripper in a gentlemans club with blokes oggling at her ass at boobies?

This ad is deadset f**ked. Who the f**k are Nandos anyway, never heard of them before this ad and I am kind of happy about that.

msp313 Says:
June 4th, 2007 at 1:56 am

I am a marketing professional, woman, and mother and I am still trying to figure out what they are going for here- is it supposed to be provocative? It is not filmed in a sexy way. Is it supposed to be appealing to mothers that they are still desirable? I don’t think so- it comes off as rather crude and gross rather than sensual or empowering. I can only imagine that adolescents may find it exciting but associating mothers and strippers may send them into therapy- not to eat chicken. It is definitely not working as a humorous ad or clever ad. I think Nandos should fire their agency and apologize for such a tasteless piece of trash.

The Nando's Chicken ad with the pole dancing mum. I just don't understand exactly who they are targeting, but associating eating chicken and a bum in your face just seems wrong to me.

Most of the women I know thing it's appalling, and the men don't think she's cute. My eight year old who happened to see it just said "YUK!"

Posted by: Steve on May 24, 2007 12:28 PM

The Nando's ad is just repulsive. What were they thinking? What's their target audience. Pole dancing mums?

Posted by: Banjo on May 24, 2007 3:25 PM

The Nando's Advertisement. It starts off with a woman pole dancing / stripping wearing only a G-string and gyrating her bare bottom to a male customer wearing a Nando's patch on her bare bottom. Cut to the next screen and this woman is fully clothed sitting down with her husband and children - What is is supposed to be about ??????

Posted by: Kane on May 24, 2007 12:16 PM

To Meg - I think the target audience for the Nandos ad is teenage boys (and men who think like teenage boys). They're trying to be edgy and "funny" and they don't mind if they offend adults.

It's the same as flavoured milk - the biggest market for iced coffee/chocolate etc is teenage boys. Remember the Dare ads? Dumb and sexist - just what teenage boys like.

Posted by: jekaho on May 24, 2007 10:05 PM

what the hell is going on with the new nandos ad? a stripper mum with nando gum?? how on earth is that meant to be selling chicken?

DISTURBING AND OFFENISVE!! I saw the ad during home and away about 7ish...what the hell?? Why does the ad cut to the kids eating at a restaurant after the women and poll dance?? Who is the targer audience? Adults? for sex ad? or kids? for restaurant family ad? NANDOS what were you thinking?? Take it off the air...totally inapropiate to be shown before 8:30pm. If you are offended at this ad or watched it early like me during a pg rated timeslot..then send complaints to - www.advertisingstandardsbureau.com.au

Offensive to say the least. Why are there kids in the commercial? I am very confused as to what the ad is trying to say. I have seen it a couple of times...still not sure what its advertising...to me it looks like a late night 1900 sex tv commercial..but then i see kids in the next scene. What the hell? That is disturbing.

So, am i supposed to want to go buy nandos chicken..because i see a half naked women dancing in a g-string! Great marketing stragedy nandos..NOT!! What a turn off. Yeah, i agree, Why are there kids in the ad? I am confused. That is just not on! I def will complain. Hopefully will be taken off air soon.

With the the others on this one. Alot people seem to be confused at this advertisement as to who there target audience is and wha their actually trying to say/sell? Just do a google search..

I just find it disturbing and bizarr, after the women is poll dancing..they shoot to a family/kids eating?? WTF?? How can you put a sex industry occupation in the same ad as family/kids? Is it saying..come to nandos for some "TITS" and "ASS"...and while your there bring the family/kids along for a good feed!

Seriousely...Nandos would be better off showing a deliciouse meal..to entice viewers to come and eat at their restaurant.

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 14/05/2007 - 02:29.

The ad is stupid. It is a total waste of money for the company. It communicates the "Nando" brand but not what it is ! It could be for a brand of pasta, a drink, a snack food. Consumers don't try hard to decipher silly ads like these, they ignore them.

Submitted by MsE on Thu, 17/05/2007 - 05:15.
I know the approach that nandos is trying to take..and that is "Attention"..BUT, it does make a HUGE difference whether the public HATE or LOVE an ad to get the desired sales response.

Just off the record. I don't find this ad comical at all. I think nandos better leave the comedy to the real comedians.

Also, it is confusing for the viewer. And judging by the responses of other, i am not the only one.

To use a 'Stripper' in this ad..just shows the LAME attempt of communicating the message. I thought nandos was more creative than that. C'mon.

I hope this ad will be in running for the Worst t.v commercial made in 2007.
